PODENCOS are a breed of hound that originate from Spain, the islands off Spain and Portugal (Podengos). They are closely related to the Egyptian hound and are part of the hound family. (Greyhounds/Galgos, whippets, lurchers etc).
Due to their incredible instincts, stamina, stubborness and prey drive, they are fantastic hunters. Actually, they love it and they are specifically designed for it. Over the years I have seen Nala do many things, but her happiest moments are when she's hunting- lizards, butterflies, rabbits and squirrels.
There are lots of Podencos in Spain that are used for hunting but are of course cherished by their families and their owners. They spend all day in the countryside using their natural abilities to help their families hunt wild game for the dinner table and it is a wonderful symbiotic relationship they have. Honestly there is no better life for a Podenco than that, as long as it is loved affectionately, kept warm and fed as much food as it needs.
HOWEVER...
In some rural parts of Spain and the islands, they are not just mistreated, but tortured, beaten and brutally murdered. Some (I AM NOT GENERALISING) hunters feel that once the hunting season is finished, the dogs no longer have value and it is cheaper to discard or kill them than it is to keep them. I've heard that there is a culture around the killings of the Podencos. Some believe that the more hurt and pain inflIcted onto these unwanted Podencos, the better the yield of the next hunting season. Sort of like a ritual of good fortune.
Here are some pictures of what this culture looks like. I warn you- it is hard to see but also important that you know why Hope For Podencos do what they do.

SO WHAT CAN WE DO?
Luckily, there are plenty of organisations then we can get behind. I have chosen to support Hope For Podencos as it's where both Nala and Monkey came from. Until the law in Spain is changed to protect these animals (Currently, most animals are protected from cruelty but Bulls, Galgos and Podencos are purposefully not), there will always be a need for rescue centres, volunteers and shelters. This costs money.
I decided in March of 2024 that I was going to donate my 'Creator Fund' from TikTok to Hope For Podencos. This means that when my videos are viewed, Hope For Podencos benefit. This allows people that don't have the money or resources to donate to still make a difference. Right now I am able to donate between £400 and £1500 a month depending on views.
Here are some other collaborations I have been a part of that have helped-
NALA AND MONKEY PRINTS

Had obviously spent hours and hours hand painting these two superstars. She very kindly offered to turn these into prints through Hope For Podencos to raise money, and money it raised! You can get a print for yourself here. Sarah also does commissions so if you wanted a painting of your own furry friend like this, you can get one!
NALA AND MONKEY ACCESSORIES

Ed at Green Dog got in touch and had the brilliant idea to create bespoke luxury collars and leads to match Nala and Monkey's colours. For every lead or collar bought, an amount will be sent to Hope For Podencos.
CHARLIE AND JT'S SPONSORED MARATHON RUN
In May 2025, I will be running the Edinburgh Marathon for Hope For Podencos. It is my first ever running event and I'll be running alongside my very good friend JT who also rescued a Podenco (Emma) when we shared a home together a few years ago.

See below pictures of Emma, Nala and JT.
